Short answer: why do I wake up tired? It can come from poor or short sleep, stress, caffeine, alcohol or screens, and sometimes from a medical cause such as sleep apnoea, so a lasting problem is worth checking.[2][6][7]

Why do I wake up tired?

  • Insomnia: a key sign is still feeling tired after waking.[2]
  • Habits: alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and device light can all interfere with sleep.[2]
  • Sleep apnoea: loud snoring, gasping, snorting or choking noises in sleep, waking up a lot, morning headaches and feeling very tired in the day. A partner or family member who has seen you sleep can help spot it.[7]
  • Other causes the NHS lists for tiredness include stress, an unhealthy lifestyle, hormonal changes and conditions such as iron deficiency anaemia, diabetes and an overactive thyroid. Don't self-diagnose.[6]

When to see a doctor

See a GP if you've felt tired for a few weeks and don't know why, it affects daily life, you also have weight loss or mood changes, or you've been told you gasp, snort or choke in your sleep.[6][7]
