Short answer: foot pain after long standing at work has familiar causes: the NHS lists standing on hard surfaces for too long among causes of heel pain, and long standing is also behind swollen, heavy feet.[1][3] Shoes and breaks usually matter most.

Foot pain after long standing at work: what to know

  • Shoes: wide, comfortable, low heel, soft sole, with cushioned heels, good arch support and soft insoles or heel pads. Avoid high heels, flip-flops and backless slippers.[1][2]
  • Rest and raise your feet when you can, and avoid long spells of standing or walking, especially barefoot.[1][2]
  • Ice pack wrapped in a towel for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours if the heel is sore.[2]
  • Move and stretch gently, and keep a healthy weight.[1][3]
  • If your feet swell, raise them and walk regularly.[3]

When to see a doctor

See a GP if the pain is severe or stops normal activities, is getting worse or keeps returning, hasn't improved after 2 weeks of home care, you have tingling or loss of feeling, or you have diabetes.[1][2]
