Short answer: to relieve lower back pain naturally, the NHS advice is to stay as active as you can, use heat or cold for comfort, and try gentle back exercises, stopping if the pain gets worse.[1] Long bed rest isn't recommended.[1]
Relieve lower back pain naturally: what to know
- Keep moving. Keep up daily activities; walking, swimming, yoga and pilates may help.[1] "Do not stay in bed for long periods."[1]
- Cold for pain and swelling. An ice pack or frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel.[1]
- Heat for stiffness or spasm. A heat pack or hot-water bottle wrapped in a tea towel.[1] Warmth is also the idea behind our sessions: a gentle stream of warm air over the sore area, so you can feel what warmth does before buying anything.
- Try gentle exercises and stretches, and stop if the pain gets worse.[1]
- Ask a pharmacist about pain relief. Painkillers aren't right for everyone, and the NHS says paracetamol on its own isn't recommended for back pain.[1]
When to see a doctor
See a GP if it hasn't improved after a few weeks, stops you doing daily activities, is worse at night or with rest, or comes with unexplained weight loss or a change in the shape of your back.[1] Get urgent help for severe pain that starts suddenly or worsens quickly, or if you feel hot, cold or shivery and unwell.[1]
