Short answer: a stiff neck in the morning is usually down to your sleeping position or pillow. The NHS suggests a low, firm pillow, heat or cold packs, gentle neck exercises, and keeping the neck moving instead of wearing a collar.[3]
Stiff neck in the morning: what to know
- Heat: a hot-water bottle wrapped in a tea towel for 20 minutes, a few times a day. Cold: frozen peas in a tea towel for 5 minutes.[3]
- Avoid driving or cycling while your neck is too stiff to look around safely.[3]
When to see a doctor
See a GP if it hasn't improved after a few weeks, painkillers don't help, or you have pins and needles or a cold arm.[3] Severe headache, dizziness, fever or weakness with neck pain needs prompt help.
