Short answer: negative ions are tiny electrically charged particles in the air, often mentioned near waterfalls and the sea.

What are negative ions?

  • The best review we found: a 2013 review and meta-analysis in BMC Psychiatry looked at 33 human studies from 1957 to 2012 and found no consistent influence of positive or negative air ionization on anxiety, mood, relaxation, sleep or personal comfort.[5]
  • One finding: negative ionization was associated with lower depression scores, particularly at the highest exposure level, based on five studies.[5]
  • What that means: the evidence is limited and mixed, so we don't claim negative ions help your mood or sleep.
  • In our range: the Amazing Body Rejuvenator lists negative ions among its technologies.[8]

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you feel low for more than a couple of weeks or it affects daily life.
