Short answer: tired, heavy legs that are worse after standing and ease when you rest with your legs up are a common description of varicose veins, and swollen ankles can come from standing or sitting still too long.[3][5] Simple habits help comfort, and persistent or one-sided symptoms need a doctor.

Tired heavy legs: what to know

  • Raise your legs on cushions when you can.[3][5]
  • Walk and move regularly. Gentle exercise helps blood flow.[3][5]
  • Avoid long spells of standing or sitting unless your feet are raised, and avoid tight clothes, socks or shoes.[3][5]
  • Shoes: wide, comfortable, low heel, soft sole.[3]

When to see a doctor

See a GP if both legs are swollen and it hasn't improved after a few days of home care or is getting worse, or if you have pain, itching, a sore that hasn't healed in 2 weeks, or veins that are getting worse.[3][5] Get an urgent appointment or call NHS 111 for swelling in one leg with no known cause, swelling that is painful, sudden or red and hot, or if you have diabetes and swollen feet or legs.[3]
