Short answer: for travel stiffness after long flights, on journeys of about 4 hours or more, the NHS advice is to walk around when you can, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and wear loose clothing.[8]

Travel stiffness after long flights: what to know

  • Move on the way. Walk about where possible; on long sitting spells, get up and move about "every hour or so."[8]
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.[8]
  • Wear loose clothing.[8]
  • After you arrive: a short walk and a warm shower help many people loosen up; this is general advice, not from the NHS page.

When to see a doctor

Know the warning signs of a blood clot (DVT): throbbing pain usually in the calf or thigh, swelling, and red, blue or darkened skin, usually in one leg.[8] Contact a GP urgently or call 111 if you think you have DVT; in India, go to a doctor or hospital the same day.[8] If you also feel breathless or have chest pain, this could be a clot in the lung. The NHS says to call 999 and not to drive yourself; in India, call an ambulance or go to the nearest emergency department.[8]
