Short answer: aches in standing jobs have clear causes: standing on hard surfaces for long is linked to heel pain, and long standing can tire the knees, feet and back; shoes, breaks and raising your feet help.[12][13][9]

Aches in standing jobs: what to know

  • Shoes: wide, comfortable, low heel, soft sole, with cushioned heels and good arch support. Avoid high heels and flip-flops.[12]
  • Shift your weight and move. Put as little weight as possible on a sore knee, for example by avoiding long periods of standing.[9]
  • Raise your feet when you can, and avoid tight socks and shoes if your feet swell.[13]
  • Cold pack wrapped in a towel for up to 20 minutes for a sore heel or knee.[12][9]
  • Warmth in the evening can feel comforting on tired legs; skip it if your feet or legs are numb or swollen, and ask a doctor first.

When to see a doctor

See a GP if pain is severe or stops normal activities, hasn't improved after 2 weeks, or both feet or legs are swollen and not improving after a few days.[12][13]
